How To Establish A Cleaning Routine For Your Business

We know you have a busy schedule, and clearing out some time to clean your office space can sometimes be hard to find. Setting out some time in your schedule to clean can really increase productivity in your business, and increase the number of your customers or clients.

Although there is no clear number to define how much a cleaner workplace improves productivity, there are many factors that contribute to more work related output. Having a cleaner office can cut down on your employee’s sick days. Less sick days, means more work being done.

As employers we try to keep stress down, and productivity high. Having a dirty office can cause more stress, whether that be a stench coming from a trash can, or uneven lighting due to a light that hasn’t been replaced for months.

Not A One Size Fits All Routine

Establishing a cleaning routine for your business can depend on many things. The size of your company, the type of business you run, and your business’s outputs. Taking these things into consideration can alter your cleaning routine drastically.

If you have a bigger building with more employees, you may need to clean more. If you run a retail business open to the public you will have to clean much more often than, let’s say, a paper selling company. If your outputs are pallets full of cardboard boxes you will need to adapt to that to reduce clutter.

Daily, Bi-Weekly, and Bi-Monthly Tasks

Almost all businesses have main things that need to be cleaned and tended to. Some more than others. (all of the following will depend on the specifics your business needs, as we discussed above)

Daily Basis

There are a few things that need to be done on a daily basis, if not, your life (business) will get out of control very quickly.

  1. Organizing your desk/office
  2. Putting chairs back
  3. Throwing away trash
  4. Taking leftover food home/put back in the fridge

If all of your employees (including you) do this, you can make your weekly and monthly jobs much easier.

Bi-Weekly Basis

Your bi-weekly schedule will be the big one to stick to. Skipping a day, or even a week can have a big impact. Here are your weekly tasks:

  1. Cleaning bathrooms
  2. Cleaning kitchen
  3. Wiping down high-touch points (light switches, door knobs, desks, keyboards, mouses, heating/cooling switches, etc)
  4. Vacuuming (depending on your businesses traffic, this can be done bi-weekly or daily)
  5. Mopping
  6. Emptying trash cans
  7. Clean out refrigerator

Bi-Monthly Basis

There are some tasks that require attention, but not weekly. It’s a good idea to do these, leaving them undone for too long is when you will start to see a negative difference.

  1. Cleaning windows
  2. Dusting
  3. Cleaning/dusting light fixtures
  4. Vacuum the places you may miss on the weekly
  5. Air spray keyboards
  6. Pressure wash the exterior of your building
  7. Clean out desk drawers for unneeded items

Organization and Accountability is Key

One of the best ways to keep yourself accountable and up to date on your cleaning is buy a big whiteboard and create it into a calendar. Write out the days you need to do your weekly and monthly tasks. Be sure to keep some space on the side and display the daily tasks for you and your team.

Make sure to keep track of what’s been done and what needs to be done. To keep everything clean while you’re cleaning, make sure all of your supplies have their spot. Whether that be in a closet, or hidden away somewhere.

Make sure each employee knows the expectations when it comes to cleaning. Whether that be their own space, or when it’s their turn this week to vacuum.

Consistency is Crucial

When keeping yourself accountable you need to make sure that you are consistent. As mentioned previously, if you take even a week off you will start to see negative impacts; and that next week will take extra effort you didn’t put into last week.

This all may seem like a lot, but if you stick with it and follow everything outlined in this blog, you will keep both your employees and customers/clients happy.
